CONTEXT

Learners determine their own project that develop solutions to needs + opportunities by visualizing their ideas using a wide variety of drawings, 2D, 3D + coding digital technologies informed by ‘intervention by design’ creative thinking. To demonstrate their final project idea, learners will document their start to finish progress with annotated images & video content created through out their project including dialog from clients + end users.

Throughout their project, 'learners will develop broad technological knowledge that will equip them to participate in society as informed citizens & provide a platform for future digital technology related education and careers' NZC

EXPLANATORY NOTES

3. Your project context needs to refer to the wider social & physical environment in which technological development occurs.

4. A conceptual design clearly communicates a proposed technological outcome that has the potential to address the brief. It is a detailed description of how the outcome would look and function. Conceptual designs can be presented using a variety of techniques which may include but are not limited to: freehand sketches, diagrams, technical drawings, scale models, computer simulations, written descriptions, details of materials, components and/or assembly instructions.

5. The brief used for this standard must allow judgement of an outcome’s fitness for purpose in the broadest sense. Fitness for purpose in the broadest sense relates to the outcome described by the conceptual design, as well as the practices used to develop the conceptual design. Pick 2 judgements, use them to define or describe your project.
Judgements about fitness for purpose may include:  considerations of the outcome’s technical and social acceptability  sustainability of resources used  ethical nature of testing practices  cultural appropriateness of trialling procedures  determination of life cycle, maintenance, ultimate disposal  health and safety.

6. Functional modelling is used to explore and evaluate developing design ideas and conceptual designs. It is undertaken to gather evidence on all aspects of the outcome including its likely technical feasibility and social acceptability

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Read all assessment information on this page. Ask for clarifications before starting your project.
2. Determine a project that addresses a need, issue, or opportunity for a client, stakeholder or end-user.
3. Develop a project brief for things to consider as part of your project design.
4. Research existing or similar projects to yours, how do they relate to your project needs or issues.
5. Draw your project ideas, consider multiple design solutions to visualise your ideas.
6. Get ongoing feedback from client/stakeholder/enduser to improve your design ideas.
7. 3D model or use a variety of digital technologies to develop your ideas digitally (functional modeling).
8. Evaluate your design ideas are fit for purpose & meet at least 2 judgement criteria.
9. Refine + justify your design using the Iterative design process & ongoing feedback from others.
10. Document the entire design process with annotated images, photos, screenshots etc using this template.

ACHIEVED - MERIT - EXCELLENCE

ACHIEVED
Develop a conceptual design considering fitness for purpose in the broadest sense involves:

1. establishing conceptual designs through generating and evaluating design ideas informed by research, including the analysis of existing outcomes and the context considerations.

ESTABLISHING CONCEPTUAL DESIGNS
Lots of drawings of your ideas based on the project brief & client needs/issues/opportunities. Take photos of your drawings & add them here with annotated descriptive notes

GENERATING + EVALUATING DESIGN
Do self review + feedback from other about your drawing ideas, evaluate your ideas based on the project brief

IDEAS INFORMED BY RESEARCH
What research have you done about your project?

ANALYSIS OF EXISTING OUTCOMES
Research the Internet for existing projects similar to yours. Add images + notes about how these projects or part of projects might relate to yours

CONTEXT CONSIDERATIONS
Describe your project, what are the needs or issues your considering.
How have you considered the influence & impact of the wider social (people) & physical environment where your project occurs

2. using evidence from research and functional modelling, including feedback from stakeholders, to evaluate conceptual designs

EVIDENCE FROM RESEARCH
A summary of the key influences from your research of things that inspired you etc

FUNCTIONAL MODELLING
Photos of drawings & screenshots of the digital technology (Arcade MakeCode etc) you used to visualise your ideas

FEEDBACK FROM STAKEHOLDERS

Evidence you have consulted with your stakeholder & end-users to get feedback of your design ideas & document how you have acted on the feedback to improve your design

FEEDBACK FROM STAKEHOLDERS
Evidence you have consulted with your stakeholder & end-users to get feedback of your design ideas & document how you have acted on the feedback to improve your design

3. communicating a final conceptual design for an outcome

COMMUNICATING
Written description of your final design. You can refer to your research & how it inspired you & other things that lead you to your final design like client feedback etc

FINAL CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
Images & description of your final project idea

4. explaining the potential of the proposed outcome to meet the brief

EXPLAIN POTENTIAL
What is the potential of your design, how does it meet the needs of the stakeholder or end user?
Pick at least 2 Judgement Criteria & explain how you considered these & how they influenced your project.

Judgements about fitness for purpose may include:  considerations of the outcome’s technical and social acceptability  sustainability of resources used  ethical nature of testing practices  cultural appropriateness of trialling procedures  determination of life cycle, maintenance, ultimate disposal  health and safety.

MEET THE BRIEF
What is the project brief? Explain how your design ideas meet the brief. Use compare/contrast literacy strategies

MERIT
Develop a REFINED conceptual design considering fitness for purpose in the broadest sense involves:

5. ongoing exploration and evaluation of design ideas to determine their suitability for inclusion in conceptual designs

ONGOING EXPLORATION
How can you make your project better? Consider finer details of your project. Take more inspiration from your feedback from others & more in-depth research of existing outcomes to develop your ideas to improve your project

EVALUATION OF DESIGN IDEAS
Get more in-depth feedback about your ideas from stakeholder, end users or others. Consider this feedback to improve your design ideas. This is called iterative design

SUITABILITY FOR INCLUSION
Not all of your design ideas will be suitable for your project. Evaluate & get feedback on your ideas to determine if they are suitable for your project

CONCEPTUAL DESIGNS
Images & description of your final project idea. How does your final project meet the brief & need or opportunities of the stakeholder/s or end-users?

6. using evidence from ongoing research and functional modelling, including feedback from stakeholders & others (wider stakeholder or end-users) to evaluate the potential of the proposed outcome to meet the brief.

USING EVIDENCE
Document the research you do that relates to all parts of your project? Ongoing is constantly re-evaluating your design ideas

FUNCTIONAL MODELLING
Annotated screenshots of 3D models or Arcade MakeCode etc digital technology visual content you create to visualise the development of your project

FEEDBACK FROM WIDER STAKEHOLDERS
Other than your stakeholder, who else have you got feedback from that might be an end-user of your project. How has their feedback affected your design development?

EVALUATE THE POTENTIAL
State how your final design meets the project brie & is fit for purpose

PROPOSED OUTCOME
Computer game or movie of your final project idea

MEET THE BRIEF
How does your final project meet the brief & need or opportunities of the stakeholder/s or end-users?

EXCELLENCE
Develop a JUSTIFIED conceptual design considering fitness for purpose in the broadest sense involves:

7. synthesising evidence from ongoing research and functional modelling, including feedback from stakeholders, to substantiate the potential of the proposed outcome to meet the brief

SYNTHESISING EVIDENCE
Synthesise evidence definitions: ’connect individual pieces of evidence from multiple sources to support the main design ideas of your project’

ONGOING RESEARCH
Constantly research how do your designs relate to existing similar solutions

FUNCTIONAL MODELLING
Annotated screenshots of 3D models or Arcade MakeCode etc digital technology visual content you create to visualise the development of your project

FEEDBACK FROM STAKEHOLDERS
What were the main points your stakeholder feedback gave you during the project? How did you use this feedback to improve your project?

SUBSTANTIATE THE POTENTIAL OF THE PROPOSED OUTCOME
Substantiate meaning: ‘provide evidence to support or prove the truth of’. Write a statement defining how your project meets the project brief.

MEET THE BRIEF
How does your final project meet the brief & need or opportunities of the stakeholder/s or end-users?
