COVID 19 ONLINE LEARNING

“Today is day one of a new reality for the 1.1 million students and families in New York City. The two operative words as we go forward are flexibility and patience.”
chalkbeat.org/ny/the-new-reality-of-coronavirus-heres-what-nyc-first-day-of-remote-learning-looked-like
“You have to be a lot more explicit in your instructions. You have to be really clear on your expectations. Your communication has to be really clear because you don’t have some of those like physical cues. You can’t see when students aren’t understanding, you know, you don’t get to see that glazed over look”.
deseret.com/utah/covid-19-teachers-pandemic-teach-human-connection-coronavirus-digital-learning
"Simplicity is key. It is critical to design distance learning experiences that have very clear instructions and utilize only one or two resources. When possible, provide resources like readings as PDFs that students can always access off-line. Keep in mind that simple structures can still require rigorous work. Tasks with few instructions often lead to the greatest amount of higher-order thinking, as students figure out what to do within defined parameters. Distance learning should push educators to think about how they can be leaner and more concise with their delivery of new information." edutopia.org/article/4-tips-supporting-learning-home/Edutopia+Newsletter

“I can tell you, now that we’re in week 7 of online learning, that much of what you will do will be trial and error. Don’t stress about that—it won’t do you any good. I’m offering the same lessons I would normally do live, but in smaller doses.” edutopia.org/article/teaching-through-pandemic-mindset-moment/Edutopia+Newsletter

TEACHER RESOURCES COPYRIGHT

tki.org.nz/Copyright-in-schools/Guidelines-for-schools/For-teachers-and-contractors/Overview-of-copyright-issues.

Who owns copyright in a teacher's or contractor's original work?
Do not assume that just because you created a work, you can necessarily do anything you like with it. Unless agreed otherwise, the school will own the copyright in any teaching materials that teachers (employees) create during the course of their employment.
Check your employment contract and the copyright policy at your school. A Creative Commons licence may be an option.

Employment contract options and samples:
To pre-empt potential problems, schools should consider covering copyright ownership and licensing in teachers' employment contracts. Here are two options. Option A: Your school retains ownership of copyright in works created by teachers (in the course of employment) but also permits (licenses) the teacher to use the work in restricted ways in order to develop the work for use outside the school and with another school or employer. Option B: The contract provides that the teacher owns copyright in the work created by the teacher (in the course of employment) but permits (licenses) your school to use the work in restricted ways

What rights do teachers and schools have?
Competing needs can arise when an employee wants to use any work that they have created during their employment at a different school or for purposes other than the educational purposes of the school that owns copyright in the work. For example:
  • the school may want to enforce its copyright in the work by limiting its use in restricted ways.
  • the employee may want to use the work in restricted ways, for instance, in order to publish an article in a book, or on a website.
  • a new school employing the teacher may also want to use the work in restricted ways.
For a full discussion of teachers' rights and responsibilities in relation to copyright, see the section For teachers and contractors.

he New Zealand Copyright Act 1994 Section 21 (2) recognises the copyright ownership rights of board of trustees of works produced by their employees in the course of their employment. By licensing its copyright, the board is giving permission in advance for others to copy and share learning resources developed by its employees and owned by the board.

WEBSITE CONTENT MANAGEMENT

Make website creation easier by knowing where the content is before you start to create or edit your website.
Organise your website content files (text, photos, images, video etc) into specific folders in your Google Drive or in D:drive on your computer. Name your files with accurate descriptions so its quicker & easier to find them.

This example shows my Google Drive AOF2020 folder that has 5 separate sub-folders for file managing various content: Documents, Photos, Images, Video, Other. Add extra sub-folders to suit your learning area.

GOOGLE SITES - WEBSITES

Information about Google Sites -  how to make a website using Google

This 4 minute long video tutorial shows how to make a website using Google Sites.
This the AC Digital website I created in this tutorial sites.google.com/alfristoncollege.school.nz/ac-digital-2021/home

Its easier to make a website if you know what you are going to put on your site & your using a content file system.

DUPLICATING WEBSITES

Save time by duplicating your Google Site websites. In this tutorial video I have created the 11AOF website with all the content complete on every page, then duplicated the new site & renamed it 12AOF. Most of the information applies to both year levels. Edit/add to your new site with specific year level content.

PUBLISHING WEBSITES

How to publish your Google Site to 'Public'. The information on your website will be seen on the Internet.

AC LOGO WEBSITE ICON

Right-click on the AC logo & save the image to your computer. This tutorial shows how to add the AC logo to your Google Site as a website icon Favicon. The logo on the right is downloaded from alfristoncollege.school.nz.

GOOGLE CHROME TAB GROUPS

Want to be a pro user of Google Chrome browser tabs like Eli?
Its easier & quicker to multi-task online with coloured tab groups.

Right click a Google Chrome tab & select "Add tab to new group". Name the tab group & colour code it.
Add more tabs to the group based the theme of the group.
Add new tab groups with different names/colours to distinguish between browser tab information.

In this example, ive created an 11AOF tab group & added the 3 assessment standards to the group, then started a technology tab group with a different colour. Its easier & quicker to flick between sites that you constantly use.
